September 13-16, 2001 Rensselaerville, New York, USA This conference was held as planned. Several featured speakers and participants were unable to attend because of the events of the past week. These included Dr. Russell W. Bessette, Executive Director of the New York State Office of Science, Technology and Academic Research (NYSTAR); Dr. Donna Dean, Acting Director of the National Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIH); and Dr. Keith Thulborn of the University of Illinois at Chicago. However, 149 individuals from across the capital region met over the four days of the conference to discuss their research, describe the advanced resources available at their institutions, and develop ideas to stimulate biotech collaborations. The conferees represented Albany Medical College, General Electric Corporate R&D, InterScience, NYSTAR, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Union University, University at Albany, Wadsworth Center and several other regional institutions and companies. The actual schedule of speakers can be found by clicking on Schedule of Speakers here. A link to the original speaker schedule is available at the upper left of this page. A Gallery of Photographs from the conference will be available on this website soon. All told, the meeting was a very positive event, one that looked to the bright times ahead in biomedical research and biotechnology and stood in stark contrast to the dark events of last Tuesday. On behalf of the The Albany Conference Foundation, I would like to thank all who helped to make the conference a success, including the speakers and other conferees, the program committee, the sponsors, and the staff at the Rensselaerville Conference Center. Original Announcement: ALBANY CONFERENCE ON BIOTECHNOLOGY IN THE CAPITAL REGION The Albany Conference Foundation will hold the first in a series of weekend conferences on "Biotechnology in the Capital Region" on September 13-16, 2001. These meetings are intended to catalyze discussion and collaborations in themes of mutual interest among scientists at the research centers and biotechnology companies in this area. The conferences will feature talks by nationally prominent researchers, who will provide a sense of the state of each field, and the directions in which it is moving. Most of the time at the conferences will be planned to allow exchange of information about ongoing activities and capabilities at each institution. This will include shorter talks and posters, as well as informal roundtables and workshops on topics that will evolve before or during the meetings. The first meeting will focus on two major emerging themes in biotechnology: Imaging and Bioengineering. It is being organized by a planning committee with representatives from Albany Medical College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, University at Albany, Wadsworth Center, and the GE Center for Research and Development. AGENDA FOR THE FALL BIOTECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE The first weekend Biotechnology conference will take place at the Rensselaerville Conference Center (www.TRIcampus.org) on Sept 13-16.
