RESEARCH INTERESTS
"Investigations into the Modes and Causes of Human Disease" We use both animal model systems, humans as experimental subjects and analysis of human illness databases to elucidate the mechanistic basis and distribution of various human diseases. In past years the focus has been primarily on neurobiology, and that remains a component of the laboratory activity through electrophysiologic study of rodent brain slices, growth of cultured neurons and study of acutely dissociated neurons by flow cytometry. These studies continue, geared particularly at study of factors involved in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's. We also have explored receptors for neurotransmitter substances on thymocytes and human lymphocytes, and perturbation of these actions by environmental contaminants. Recent studies have expanded to explore relationships in humans between physiologic, toxicologic and sociologic factors leading to such diseases as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, thyroid disease and diseases of the respiratory system. In some of these studies we obtain medical information, blood or urine for clinical chemistry indicators and for levels of environmental contaminants (PCBs, pesticides, radioactivity, etc.) in order to determine relationships between behavior and/or exposure and development of disease. In other studies we utilize state datasets for birth, death or hospitalization in order to correlate factors such as place of residence in relation to proximity to waste sites or socioeconomic class with rates of disease in the whole population. Recent investigations have focused on air pollution, especially particulate air pollution, and human disease, using state datasets for study of events such as 9/11.
