New York State Department of Health - Wadsworth Center - Cytohematology Proficiency Testing

Slide 011 [100X]

This specimen was taken from a technologist who attended a cytohematology review session here at the Wadsworth Center. He revealed that he was previously diagnosed with thalassemia minor and was recovering from Lyme disease. Other than slightly abnormal red cell morphology, his white cell differential was normal. Photographic slide 004 which was used in January 1993 was also taken from this case. The acceptable response was normal lymphocyte (code 48). This cell was misidentified by 18 laboratories as an atypical lymphocyte (code 52), by 20 laboratories as a nucleated red cell (code 55) and by 1 laboratory as a plasma cell (code 53).
