This specimen was taken from a student who recently returned from India. He was diagnosed with malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax. The slide showed the ring form of the parasite. The acceptable response was malarial parasites (code 26). This cell was misidentified by 3 laboratories as Pappenheimer bodies (code 23), and by 1 laboratory as a nucleated red cell (code 55).
