This slide was taken from a peripheral blood smear made from a 42 year-old male with a history of leukocytosis and anemia. His white blood cell count was noted to be 172.0 X 103/µL. Diagnosis was accelerated phase of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). Additionally, the patient was positive for the Philadelphia chromosome. The cells indicated by the arrows are myeloblasts with slightly indented nuclei eccentrically and centrally placed. While not as prominent on this reproduction, multiple nucleoli and fine chromatin material are present. The cytoplasm is blue. A promyelocyte and segmented neutrophils are also present.
