This slide was taken from a peripheral blood smear made from a 33 year old male admitted for sickle cell crisis. The primary diagnosis was beta sickle-thalassemia. Evaluation of his hemoglobin revealed an absence of hemoglobin A1, hemoglobin S of 94.5% and hemoglobin A2 of 4.7%. The arrows on slide 024 indicate target cells.
