This slide was taken from a peripheral blood smear made from a 33-year old male admitted for sickle cell crisis. The primary diagnosis was beta sickle thalassemia. Evaluation of his hemoglobin revealed an absence of hemoglobin A1, hemoglobin S of 94.5% and hemoglobin A2 of 4.7%. The arrow on slide 025 indicates a Howell-Jolly body.
