New York State Department of Health - Wadsworth Center - Cytohematology Proficiency Testing

Slide 027 [100X]

This slide was taken from a peripheral blood smear of a 19 year-old female being treated for leukemia. Upon admission, her white cell count was noted to be 133.0 X 103/µL. Diagnosis was acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). The cell indicated by the arrow is a smudge cell. A group of lymphoblasts with smooth transparent chromatin containing pale blue nucleoli and little cytoplasm are also present in the field. This case is the same as slide 017b that was used in the January 1994 test event.
