New York State Department of Health - Wadsworth Center - Cytohematology Proficiency Testing
Slide 041 [100X]
This slide was taken from the peripheral blood of a 49 year-old white female with a two year history of anemia and thrombocytopenia requiring red cell transfusion for the last year. Marked splenomegaly was present and a splenectomy was performed. Prior to surgery, the platelet count was 26 X 103/µL and the white blood cell count was 49.1 X 103/µL with 343 nucleated red blood cells. The white count corrected to 11.0 X 103/µL. Two days post operative, her uncorrected white blood cell count was 92.2 X 103/µL with 2,252 nucleated red blood cells which corrected to 3.9 X 103/µL. Diagnosis was myelodysplastic syndrome. The cells indicated by the arrows are nucleated red blood cells.
