This slide was taken from the peripheral blood of a 48 year old female that presented in the emergency room with vomiting, shoulder pain and an abnormal CBC that illustrates plasma cell leukemia as part of multiple myeloma. The patient was diagnosed and treated for acute myelogenous leukemia beginning in 1983; she had been free of disease for several years. The slide showed marked rouleaux as excessive protein present interfered with the hemoglobin determination. A plasma cell was also present.
