New York State Department of Health - Wadsworth Center - Cytohematology Proficiency Testing

Slide 044 [100X]

This slide was taken from the peripheral blood of a 45 year-old male with splenomegaly, fatigue and pancytopenia. His white blood cell count was 48.0 X 103/µL and platelet count was 109.0 X 103/µL. The cells were a classic representation of hairy cells demonstrating hair-like projections of the cytoplasm. The patient was diagnosed with hairy cell leukemia. Another view from this case was used as slide 015 in the September 1993 test event and as a proficiency testing slide for the cytohematology program for the 1990-91 testing year.
