This slide was taken from the same patient as Slide 057. The cells indicated by the arrows are target cells (codocytes). Target cells are frequently seen in thalassemia major as well as in liver disease, iron deficiency anemia, and hemoglobinopathies. They may also be artifacts due to the slow drying of the blood smear in a humid environment.
