New York State Department of Health - Wadsworth Center - Cytohematology Proficiency Testing
Slide 070 [100X]
This slide was from a 61 year-old female with myelofibrosis. The patient had 106 nucleated red blood cells per 100 white cell differential. Since the nucleus is present in this cell, it is a nucleated red blood cell. A polychromatophilic erythrocyte has extruded its nucleus but shows the bluish-gray hue due to the residual RNA. When stained with supravital stain, it appears as a reticulocyte.
