Slide 071 [100X]
The cell indicated by the arrow is an eosinophil. Eosinophils are characterized by the presence of large, reddish-orange staining granules, which are distributed throughout the cytoplasm. A segmented neutrophil is present in the same field for staining comparison. Thirty-eight laboratories classified this cell as a basophil. The cytoplasm of a basophil stains slightly pink to colorless, and contains specific dark purple to blue-black granules.
