New York State Department of Health - Wadsworth Center - Cytohematology Proficiency Testing
Slide 075 [100X]
This slide was from a 19-year-old female with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). The patient had 93% blasts, many showing the presence of Auer rods. "Auer rods are rod-like bodies representing primary granules that stain a reddish purple. They are found in the cytoplasm of myeloblasts, monoblasts, and promyelocytes in acute monocytic or acute myelogenous leukemia ...." Hematology: Principles and Procedures, Brown,6th Edition pg. 82. Since the cell is a myeloblast, code 2 is also an acceptable response.
