The object indicated by the arrow is a giant platelet. This photomicrograph was taken form the March 1997 glass slide proficiency test event, Slide 005, hereditary spherocytosis. The presence of giant platelets was noted by 94 % of the participating laboratories laboratories participating in the March 1997 glass slide event. Normal platelets are 1 to 4 µm in size.
