New York State Department of Health - Wadsworth Center - Cytohematology Proficiency Testing
Slide 084 [100X]
The cells depicted in this image are aytpical lymphocytes. This photomicrograph was taken from the blood of a 19-year -old college student with infectious mononucleosis. This slide was taken from the February 1998 glass slide proficiency test event, Slide 007. Several laboratories called to request that the term they use within their laboratory be listed on our form. Due to limited space, we use the broad term atypical lymphocyte to collectively cover virocytes, variant lymphocytes, leukocytoid lymphocytes, transformed lymphocytes, reactive lymphocytes, Türk cells, Downey cells , plasmacytoid lymphocyte and lymphocytoid plasma cell etc. (Brown BA, Hematology: Principles and Procedures, Lea & Febiger, Philadelphia, 1993, p. 76)
