The correct identification for this photographic transparency was nucleated red blood cell (code: 36).The photograph was taken from a slide of a 36 year-old female diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). The white cell count was elevated (28.6 x 109 / L), while the red cell parameters were slightly decreased (RBC 3.95 x 1012 / L; hemoglobin 11.9 G /dL; and hematocrit 35.4%). The blue-purple nucleus displays pyknotic degeneration with condensed homogeneous chromatin. A tear drop cell is located above and to the right of the arrowed cell.
