Almost all laboratories correctly identified this cell as an eosinophil (code: 13). The characteristic large, reddish-orange granules are prominent in eosinophils, thanks to their affinity for the eosin or acidophilic dye used in conventional Romanowsky stains. The arrowed cell has abundant cytoplasm and a bilobed nucleus with compact and dark chromatin. Educational slide E04 and this image are both from an 89-year-old male with peripheral hemophagocytosis.
