| Slide 009:
Diagnosis: hairy cell leukemia Available data: 70 year- old male. Fourteen laboratories (3%) failed to identify the presence of hairy cells. This case was also used in the January 1998 hematology proficiency testing event - photographic transparency slide number 080. At that time, four percent (4%) of the laboratories failed to correctly identify hairy cells by photographic transparency. Other prominent findings on this slide were smudge or basket cells. No error points were assigned when indicating the presence of spherocytes or target cells. The responses for band neutrophils and segmented neutrophils were combined and graded as total neutrophils.
