Slide 010:

Diagnosis: acute myeloid stem cell leukemia FAB M0.

Available data: 67 year- old male. Acute undifferentiated leukemia (M0) AML, is a group of disorders in which both lymphoid and myeloid characteristics are observed. "They may be bilineal (a mixed population of cells expressing either myeloid or lymphoid features) or biphenotypic (individual cells showing both myeloid or lymphoid features in the same cells)." Rodak, B. F. Diagnostic Hematology, W.B. Saunders Company, Philadelphia, 1995, p.352.

Wright-Giemsa bone marrow smears revealed a predominance of blasts with round nuclei, evenly spread chromatin, 1-3 prominent often pleomorphic nucleoli, and a scant to moderate amount of lightly basophilic cytoplasm. Auer rods and prominent vacuolization were not observed. A few blasts were larger in size with irregular or folded nuclei and more abundant cytoplasm.
