Slide 036:
Diagnosis: Acute myelocytic leukemia (AML)
Available data: 43 year- old
male.
Prominent
cell findings pertaining to slide 036 included myeloblasts with Auer
rods, basophilic stippling, smudge/basket cells and teardrop
cells.
Nucleated red blood cells were evident on this slide. Laboratories
failing to identify these features were assessed error points. Three
hundred ninety two laboratories (87%) noted the presence of Auer
rods. No error points were assigned when indicating the presence or
absence of elliptocytes, schistocytes, or spherocytes.
The
responses for band neutrophils and segmented neutrophils were
combined and graded as total neutrophils; the responses for
myeloblasts and blasts not classified were combined and graded
together.
Four hundred sixty-three (463) laboratories passed this slide
with a score of 80% or higher. Ten (10) laboratories received scores below
80%.
