| These four images were taken from the March 1997 Cytohematology Proficiency
Test Event - Slide 002. A smudge, or basket cell, is the reddish-
purple nuclear remnant of a ruptured white blood cell. These cells are generally
more fragile than normal, therefore, they rupture during smear preparation.
