Spherocytes

These images were taken from the 1997 Cytohematology Proficiency Test Event - Slide 005. According to Barbara Brown, Hematology: Principles and Procedures, "Spherocytes are almost spherical in shape. They are not biconcave like a normal red blood cell and do not have the central area of pallor which a normal red cell shows. These cells are associated with hemolytic anemia, ABO hemolytic disease of the newborn, and hereditary spherocytosis. In some hereditary red cell enzyme deficiencies, the spherocytes may have many fine needle-like projections on the surface of the cell."
