Infectious mononucleosis

Infectious mononucleosis is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, a DNA herpes-type virus that infects B lymphocytes. Patients present with mild to severe adenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, fever, malaise, pharyngitis, and a characteristic peripheral blood smear demonstrating reactive lymphocytes.
