About the Laboratories
Welcome to the Clinical Chemistry and Hematology Laboratories. We are an integral part of the Laboratory of Molecular Diagnostics of the Wadsworth Center and are involved in service, research, and education in these two vital areas of clinical laboratory science. Information on our activities, including proficiency testing archives and updates, are available. The laboratories carry out the laboratory improvement programs enacted by the New York Public Health Law and by CLIA '88 in order to monitor and improve the quality of testing performed by laboratories.
The laboratories carry out appropriate proficiency testing of laboratories, evaluate performance and recommend corrective actions for raising performance levels to meet and exceed acceptable standards. Reference and consultation services are provided to permit laboratories, researchers, Federal agencies, and other States' agencies. The laboratories are certified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to provide reference measurements for lipids. Staff scientists also investigate, develop, and evaluate technical procedures, provide consultation and laboratory support to health officers, physicians, and laboratory personnel; conduct and participate in seminars, workshops, scientific meetings; conduct research in clinical biochemistry, hematology, clinical enzymology, and drug analysis with the aim of improved analytical techniques, reference values, and biological standards.
