Smart Lighting Center

The Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center (ERC) is a National Science Foundation-supported center led by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in which Wadsworth Center serves as the test bed for the bio-imaging team.

The ERC aims to advance light-emitting diode (LED) technology by making substantial progress in novel materials, device technologies and system applications. The main goal is to demonstrate revolutionary lighting systems for bio-imaging, high-efficiency displays and illumination devices, safer transportation and novel modes of communications.

The Smart Lighting Center will design and build new bio-imaging systems that exploit smart lighting, with the vision of improving the accuracy of specimen analysis and reducing healthcare costs. These systems will evolve from the short-term demonstration of robust fluorescence microscopy to longer-term, truly transformational bio-imaging systems based on solid-state and lens-less, digital microscopy.
