This gram-negative rod can be found in humans, birds, domestic animals and pets. It can cause a gastrointestinal illness that is characterized by watery, sometimes bloody stools, in addition to fever and abdominal pain. Infection with Y. enterocolitica can sometimes mimic appendicitis. It is typically acquired by ingestion of contaminated food or water.
