Specimen Collection for HIV Diagnostic Testing:
HIV specimen collection kit:
Specimen collection kits, which include a requisition, collection tube, mailing and shipping supplies, can be obtained through the State Order Desk. Kits can be ordered by calling the order desk at (518) 474-4175.
Obtaining and labeling specimens:
A whole blood specimen should be collected in the EDTA (purple top) tube supplied with the collection kit. The laboratory requires a full tube of blood to perform all testing that may be necessary.
The specimen tube must be labeled with the patient identifiers. Failure to properly label the sample will result in an "unsatisfactory specimen" that will be rejected and a request will be made for another specimen to be drawn.
Completing the requisition form:
A properly completed test requisition form must accompany the specimen. Failure to
accurately complete the test requisition form will result in a delay in the processing of the
specimen.
