Joachim Frank, Ph.D.
Dr. Frank, who joined Wadsworth Center in 1975, is chief of the Laboratory for Computational Biology and Molecular Imaging. A native of Germany, he conducted his doctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Martinsried and received his doctorate from the Technical University of Munich. Dr. Frank developed methods of cryo-electron microscopy and image processing aimed at three-dimensional visualization of macromolecules. He applies these methods in studying the mechanism of protein synthesis. Dr. Frank holds faculty appointments at the University at Albany and the New York State University Medical School. His internationally renowned research has earned Dr. Frank prestigious honors, among them the Elizabeth Robert Cole Award of the Biophysics Society and appointment, in 1998, as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. He is also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Biophysical Society.
