2006 Public Lecture Series

Series Host: Carmen Mannella, Ph.D.

Dr. Mannella is director of Wadsworth's Division of Molecular Medicine, overseeing programs in structural and cell biology, immunology and cancer. He is also co-director of Wadsworth's federally funded imaging resource, heading the program in electron tomography. He uses this 3D imaging technique to explore the internal structure of the cell, particularly the mitochondrion, the "factory" that produces the fuel (ATP) needed to power the cell's machinery. Dr. Mannella is a professor and past chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences of the School of Public Health, University at Albany. He received a doctorate in biophysics at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and was a National Cancer Institute postdoctoral fellow at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY.
