Influenza Activities

The Influenza Activities component of the Emerging Infections Program was launched in 2004 after the EIP's successful emergency response characterizing the impact of the 2003-2004 influenza season on the pediatric population. Currently the EIP is actively involved in three projects.

Projects and Goals:

  • Pediatric Influenza Hospitalization Surveillance Project. The goal of this project is to characterize the burden of and risk factors for laboratory-confirmed pediatric influenza-associated hospitalizations in several geographic locations in the U.S.
  • Adult Influenza Hospitalization Surveillance Project. The goal of this project is to estimate the rates and trends of laboratory-confirmed influenza-associated hospitalization, examine risk factors, and describe the clinical features and course of influenza disease among adults ≥ 18 years of age.
  • Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Trivalent Inactivated Vaccine among Children Age 6-59 months in Preventing Hospitalizations with Influenza. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the overall effectiveness of TIV among children aged 6-59 months in preventing hospitalization with laboratory-confirmed, community-acquired influenza virus infection.
