Hepatitis Program

In 2004, the New York State Department of Health, in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, launched the Enhanced Acute Hepatitis Surveillance Project, employing the Emerging Infections Program (EIP) model. Surveillance is conducted in three EIP regions of the state (Buffalo, Rochester, and the Capital District). The project includes Local Health Department and participating laboratory components. The purpose of the project is to develop model demonstration projects for enhanced viral hepatitis A, B and C surveillance, to increase case ascertainment of acute hepatitis cases, and to assess the public health impact of viral hepatitis and evaluate methods for their prevention and controls.

Goals and Objectives:

  • Expand standard follow-up activities for incoming positive hepatitis laboratory reports.
  • Collect detailed clinical and risk factor information for all acute hepatitis cases.
  • Ensure complete and timely case reporting.
  • Ensure patient education and counseling for all acute hepatitis cases.
  • Conduct active, laboratory based surveillance.
  • Collect serologic specimens for acute hepatitis A and B cases.
  • Link liver enzyme results with hepatitis C test results to increase case finding of acute hepatitis C cases.
