Research Support

To advance scientific knowledge and develop treatments and cures for spinal cord injury, the Spinal Cord Injury Research Board program staff issues Requests for Applications (RFAs). Check the web site for updates, or sign up for SCIRB eAlerts and indicate RFAs as your area of interest.

Requests for Applications

Richter Center of Research Excellence

The New York State Department of Health and the Spinal Cord Injury Research Board (SCIRB) invites eligible applicants to submit proposals to accelerate the pace with which basic (preclinical) findings are translated into clinical practice for the benefit of spinal cord-injured (SCI) persons. Specifically, the successful Richter Center of Research Excellence application will focus on a set of important and well-defined problems that promise transition to clinical trials within a decade.

Promoting Recruitment of New Spinal Cord Injury Researchers in New York State

The New York State Department of Health and the Spinal Cord Injury Research Board (SCIRB) seeks applications that support the research activities of scientists recruited to establish research programs in SCI at their institution. Successful applications will demonstrate the following inter-related components: a well trained scientist, whose research accomplishments in the SCI field are highly meritorious when compared to other individuals at the same stage of their career, and who is moving to the institution to establish an independent laboratory with the aim of advancing cures for SCI; and a commitment by the recruiting institution for long term support of the successful candidate demonstrated by the award of space and equipment, access to core facilities and students, protected research time and a measurable commitment to develop or expand SCI research at the institutional level. Thus, it is anticipated that research funded through this RFA will lead to further SCI research by the institution and the PI, with future funding from other sources.

Requests for Proposals

The New York State Department of Health invites proposals from qualified organizations to organize, coordinate planning and oversee all aspects of spinal cord injury research program symposia to be held in 2011, 2013 and 2015. The goals of the symposia will be to:

  • promote communication, collaboration and synergy within the international spinal cord injury (SCI) research community through seminars, workshops, poster sessions,
  • plenary sessions and other conference activities designed to elucidate advancements in the field of SCI science;
  • create an opportunity for New York State SCI researchers to showcase their achievements; and
  • engage the public in dialogue regarding SCI research.
