The Genomics Institute
Genomics Institute
Welcome
The mission of the Genomics Institute is to translate the promise of genomics into public health practices. The goal is to use emerging genetic knowledge to improve health and the quality of life, establishing and implementing scientifically, medically and ethically sound procedures. As part of the Wadsworth Center of the New York State Department of Health, the Genomics Institute is dedicated to improving the health of citizens and supporting basic and applied research.
As part of its mission to promote public health genomics, the Genomics Institute:
- Fosters basic research for discovery
- Supports multi-institutional interdisciplinary research
- Spearheads translational genomics
- Provides training and education
The Genomics Institute collaborates with academic, public and private sectors and supports basic science, clinical and pharmaceutical projects.
We seek collaborative projects that are aimed at improving the well-being of individuals and reducing the burden of disease on society, by identifying the key genetic and environmental factors, and deciphering their complex interactions.
The projects currently supported by The Genomics Institute range from prokaryotic to eukaryotic genetics, and from animal models (transgenics) to human studies, including infectious diseases, cancer, arthritis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and healthy aging. The breadth of work spans mechanistic basic research, genome-wide association studies, wild-life population studies, and bioterrorism preparedness.
