Breath Alcohol Permit Program Questions

What are the requirements to become certified as a breath analysis instrument operator?
A breath analysis permit is issued to an operator upon successful completion of an approved training program consisting of 24 hours of instruction, training on instruments, formal examination and a demonstration of proficiency, supervised by a certified technical supervisor.

How long does my breath analysis permit remain valid before I must recertify?
Operator permits for breath alcohol analysis instruments are valid for two years.

What options are available for recertification?
A breath alcohol operator may fulfill the requirements for recertification by:

  • Attending a recertification class
  • Performing 6 or more breath analyses determinations on subjects. This is allowed for one recertification requirement, then for subsequent recertification, the operator must attend a recertification class or complete on-line course training

How soon can I recertify prior to my permit expiring?
Recertification cannot be more than 120 days (~4 months) prior to the permit expiration date.

What happens if I do not recertify on time?
Breath alcohol permitted operators who do not recertify within the allotted time frame (2 years) will be given a 30 day grace period extending the expiration date of the permit. An extension requires a written request by the training agency and operator. No further extension is allowed, and the operator will have to attend a 24 hour certification course for recertification.

One my permit is voided, what steps need to be taken?
Once a permit is voided, the operator must retake the 24 hour certification course to reapply. The effective date of the permit will be the new date of approval after completion of the course.
