Criteria for acceptable performance:

  • ABO Group - 100% accuracy
  • D (Rh0) typing - 100% accuracy
  • Unexpected antibody detection - ≥ 90% accuracy
  • Antibody identification - ≥ 90% accuracy
  • Compatibility testing - 100% accuracy
  • Rh phenotyping - ≥ 80% accuracy
  • Direct Antiglobulin Test - ≥ 80% accuracy
  • Subgroups of A - ≥ 80% accuracy

Participants are provided several reports to assist them in the review and evaluation of test performance. Each laboratory receives a test event summary report listing the analytes and scores for the past three test events, a supplementary report characterizing the referee laboratory performance and a statistical summary report listing the number of laboratories participating in each analyte and the number of correct responses for each analyte.

In the event of a failure, the laboratory must investigate the source of the unsatisfactory performance and implement a plan of corrective action. Program staff is available to assist laboratories in developing appropriate corrective actions based upon the nature of the proficiency test failure. If available, additional test specimens may be shared with the laboratory for use as part of the remediation. Documentation of remedial action must be retained onsite for surveyor review.

Failure of the proficiency testing program is defined as failure of two of three consecutive test events. New laboratories entering the program must successfully complete one test event as well as an onsite inspection before a permit is issued.
