Blood ServicesBlood Services refers to the collection, testing, storage and transfusion of human blood and blood products, generally by blood banks. Individuals may have their own (autogeneic) blood or blood products collected and stored for use, or donated (allogenic) blood and blood products may be used after appropriate compatibility and pre-transfusion testing has been performed. Blood banks may also need to hold additional categories as follows, if testing is performed on-site: Immunohematology (for red cell serologic tests for blood collection, transfusion, or other immunohematologic tests), Diagnostic Immunology-Donor Services Serology (for the performance of the required serologic tests for infectious agents), HIV (either Limited, General or Viral Identification, for the performance of donor HIV testing), Clinical Chemistry (for ALT or total protein testing), Hematology (for any hematology tests performed to determine donor suitability), Virology-Molecular Techniques Only (for nucleic acid testing for viral agents other than HIV) and Bacteriology-Restricted (for microbial screening).
