Cytogenetics Laboratory Director
The Wadsworth Center, the New York State Public Health Laboratory, seeks a director of its clinical cytogenetics laboratory. The successful candidate will expand and enhance the laboratory's diagnostic testing through the use of advanced technologies, establish a rigorous, externally funded research program in cytogenetics, and provide cytogenetics services to other investigators at the Center. In addition, the successful applicant will provide leadership in the development of standards of practice and provision of proficiency testing programs as required for effective regulatory oversight of clinical cytogenetics laboratories throughout the country that service health care providers in New York State. For this, the incumbent will work closely with the Genetics and Oncology sections. The current clinical laboratory provides primarily chromosome studies on blood from individuals to detect constitutional abnormalities. In addition to this casework, the laboratory is equipped to provide reference laboratory prenatal testing services and bone marrow studies. Expansion into other areas of cytogenetic testing, including cancer and comparative genome hybridization, is encouraged. The existing laboratory staff has extensive experience in clinical cytogenetics.
The Cytogenetics Laboratory is located within the Wadsworth Center, a modern, well-equipped facility and a unique biomedical and environmental scientific institution with a staff of over 1,000, including 160 doctoral level scientists. The Cytogenetics Laboratory is a part of the Division of Genetic Disorders, which also includes the state's newborn screening program, and the DNA laboratory. Numerous other basic and applied research laboratories in various disciplines provide an outstanding scientific environment. Centralized core facilities in biochemistry, immunology, molecular genetics, transgenics, and computational biology provide state-of-the-art equipment and laboratory support services for research and clinical laboratories. Faculty membership in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, School of Public Health at the State University of New York provides opportunities for academic contributions in Ph.D. programs.

Minimal Qualifications:
Doctoral Degree with a minimum of three years of professional experience in the field. Preferred Qualifications: New York State Certificate of Qualification (or eligibility) in all areas of Clinical Cytogenetics; and American Board of Medical Genetics Certification in Clinical Cytogenetics (or eligibility).
