2004 Life, Science and Health: Diseases Across Species

Being sick is no walk in the park, but getting sick can be.

Two-thirds of all infectious diseases spread from animals to people. Sometimes directly: contact with a rabid raccoon. Other times indirectly: a bite from a mosquito that fed on a West Nile-infected bird. Inanimate agents even play a role: drinking water contaminated by cattle carrying the giardia parasite.

Scientists from the Wadsworth Center will delve into these so-called zoonotic diseases. They will explain basic concepts -- animal reservoirs, vectors, transmission cycles -- and explore research at the scientific frontiers.

Learn about pathogen variability and competent disease vectors. Understand how mosquito genetics contributes to malaria, and how animal husbandry influences influenza. Hear about contemporary approaches to containing rabies and other intervention strategies, molecular and otherwise. Appreciate the scientific principles underlying research efforts; what scientists know and need to know.

Wildlife. Domestic and exotic pets. Mosquitoes, ticks and fleas. Understanding them and their diseases is your best defense. Let research scientists be your guide.
