The Laboratory of Newborn Screening and Genetic Services administers a statewide clinical genetics program currently comprised of 24 Genetics Units which provide comprehensive genetics disease services on a regional basis.
The Laboratory of Newborn Screening and Genetic Services screens all newborns for congenital diseases, identifies children for follow-up intervention and medical treatment referral, and provides cytogenetic testing services and referral to facilities worldwide for rare genetic tests.
The lab also participates in the laboratory reference system.
Funded genetics providers have demonstrated the ability to provide non-categorical comprehensive genetics services including diagnosis, counseling, follow-up and education.
Educational programs are provided to professional and lay populations to increase appropriate use of available genetics services.
