Research Interests
Dr. Cirino is Director of the Biodefense Laboratory for the New York State Department of Health's Wadsworth Center. The majority of his research is focused to identify potential targets for diagnostics, therapeutics, and/or vaccines for infectious diseases and potential biological weapons. Ongoing research includes evaluation of vaccine candidates and inhibitors for anthrax intoxication, specifically inhibition of lethal toxin poisoning. New projects also include development of passive immunotherapy to anthrax toxins and ricin toxin. Diagnostic platforms being developed include multiplex real-time PCR, microsphere array antibody recognition assays, and fiber-optic bundle detection arrays. Dr. Cirino currently serves on several national committees focused on public health, laboratory biosafety and biosecurity, and food safety.
