Program Description and Research Interests

Dr. Egan is the Deputy Director of the Biodefense Laboratory, which analyzes human specimens and environmental samples for biothreat agents. The research of this laboratory focuses on the development of diagnostics for the detection of biothreat agents using platforms such as real-time PCR and microsphere immunoassay arrays. Assays for the detection of ricin toxin, C. botulinum neurotoxins, Staphylococcal enterotoxins, Orthopoxviruses, Francisella tularensis, Brucella spp. Bacillus anthracis, and Yersinia pestis using real-time PCR or immunoassays are examples of current projects. Dr. Egan is also interested in the development of novel strategies for the collection and analysis of biothreat samples. She has been actively involved in the training of first responders and clinical laboratorians in New York State in the areas of biosafety, agents of bioterrorism, and proper collection of biothreat samples.
