Research Interests
Synthetic organic industrial and agricultural chemicals have been produced in the United States since the early part of the twentieth century. Large quantities of these persistent organic pollutants (POP) were disseminated in the environment long before their involvement in adverse health effects in humans was identified. Our laboratory analyzes clinical specimens (serum, plasma, and adipose tissue) for POP such as polychlorinated biphenyls, pesticides and polybrominated flame retardants. Using state of the art instrumentation we are able to measure background levels of POP in the general population and determine if an increase in body burden has occurred after accidental environmental or occupational exposure. Research efforts involve the identification of biomarkers of human exposure to POP.
