Research Interests
The primary focus of this laboratory is development of new technologies for use in New York's newborn screening program. These efforts have resulted in faster and more accurate ways to detect hemoglobinopathies in newborns, better precision in detecting PKU during the first days of life, and, most recently, multiplexing of newborn screening tests so that multiple analytes can be detected during a single analytical procedure. With demonstration of fast and accurate amplification of DNA from the newborn's dried blood specimen, this laboratory now is examining ways in which this moiety can be used to provide information about the medical status of the newborn.
