Program Description and Research Interests
Dr. Rosen is director of the Calicivirus Diagnostic Laboratory. The laboratory is involved in the detection of noroviruses in stool samples from outbreaks of gastroenteritis in New York State. The laboratory also performs analyses for noroviruses in stool and biopsy samples from immunocompromised patients, particularly from patients who have received intestinal transplants. Analyses are performed by conventional PCR and confirmed by sequence analysis, which enables strain associations and the comparison of strains from different outbreaks. The laboratory is currently developing real-time PCR assays for norovirus detection. Additional research projects include the expansion of sample types (including food, water, and environmental) for the detection of noroviruses and assays for additional gastrointestinal virus pathogens.
