Forensic Identity Program
The power of forensic DNA testing, when correctly performed and interpreted, has been become very evident in recent years. It has allowed the apprehension and conviction of violent criminals and has led to the exoneration of wrongly accused individuals. Moreover, DNA testing has been used extensively in recent years to identify the remains of victims of natural disasters and terrorism. The goal of the Forensic Identity Program is to maintain a laboratory and a regulatory program which plays a significant role in ensuring the quality of forensic DNA testing performed by private laboratories on New York State samples. The Forensic Identity laboratory strives to stay abreast of new technologies and approaches to forensic DNA testing as they emerge and to prepare for future forensic challenges. Regulation of laboratories with a permit in Forensic Identity involves the development and promulgation of New York State Department of Health standards for forensic DNA testing, the review of the credentials of laboratory staff, the development and implementation of biannual proficiency tests in forensic DNA testing, review of laboratory standard operating procedures, validation studies, and its quality assurance program and inspection of the laboratory every two years.
