GENERAL

WEB is a point-and-click interface for display and interaction with SPIDER images and data. WEB is written in C for the MOTIF/X-WINDOW system. WEB has been developed and tested on SGI computers. If you have a non-SGI computer, you will need a C compiler and MOTIF development software on your computer to be able to compile and link WEB.

LOADING WEB

cd PARENT-DIR

(where PARENT-DIR is parent of desired location of Web)

mkdir web

(creates a new sub-directory for Web, hereafter referred to as WEB_DIR)

cp -r "your_cdrom_device"/web/* web

The following directories will be created:
WEB-DIR/src -------- source code, libraries, executables
WEB_DIR/bin ---------- executables
WEB_DIR/docs ------- documentation, html pages
WEB_DIR/rgb -------- rgb color look-up-tables
WEB_DIR/AppPlusS ---- AppPlusS widget for Linux 24 bit


INSTALLATION

• Installation of executable.
  • Using precompiled and linked executable.
    The WEB directory WEB_DIR contains an executable binary file "web_dec". Use the following commands to run WEB from a terminal window:

    cd WEB_DIR/bin
    web_dec
    

    If the executable binary does not run proceed with the next step.

  • Linking the executable.
    If WEB does not run there is probably an incompatibility in the run-time libraries. You may have to link WEB on your computer. WEB_DIR contains makefiles named "Makefile_dec" which compile the source code, place the object code in a library, link the object code, and create an executable binary file. Use the following commands to link WEB:

    cd WEB_DIR
    mv ../bin/web_dec ../bin/web_dec_orig
    make -f Makefile_dec ../bin/web_dec
    

    If the executable from the above step does not run proceed with the next step:

  • Compiling and Linking the Executable. If WEB does not run there is probably an incompatibility in the object code versions. You may have to compile the source code on your computer. Use the following commands to compile and link WEB:

    cd WEB_DIR
    mv web_dec.a web_dec_orig.a
    make -f Makefile_dec ../bin/web_dec
    

    If the make operation fails or the new executable does not run, contact us at the address below.

    Note: the archive (ar) command in the Makefile will use a lot of space in your TMPDIR. If you get a message about no space being left on your device I suggest you redefine TMPDIR to a directory that has space (e.g.):
    setenv TMPDIR /usr/tmp

• Other Installation Tasks.
  • Setting "web" Command. You can define an alias for your WEB location. If you are using the 'C' shell, you would put a line similar to the following in your .cshrc startup file, depending on the version of WEB you intend to use:

    alias web WEB_DIR/bin/web_dec
    

    Alternatively, you can modify your path so that your your system can locate the executable file when you type "web". To alter your path add the following to the PATH environmental variable in your startup file:

    WEB_DIR/bin
    

    then rename the web_dec executable in WEB_DIR to: web.

  • Setting environment variables.
    Set environment variables for the location of your *.rgb color-look-up-table files. If you are using the 'C' shell, you should put lines similar to the following in your .cshrc startup file:

    setenv SPRGB_DIR "YOUR_RGB_FILE_DIR/"
    setenv WEBMAN_DIR "WEB_DIR/docs"
    

    Sample color look-up-tables are provided in the rgb sub-directory of web.

• Setting X-Window visual.
  Web is written for an 8-bit false-color visual. If your X-server is set for 24 bit true-color exclusively, you may have to alter the setting to allow use of an 8 bit false-color visual. See the SPIDER FAQ for further info.

TESTING

To test Web use the following command:


web
USE MOUSE TO SELECT MENU ITEMS FROM PULL-DOWN MENUS

You may enter the file extension on the command line, e.g.:


web dat
