Division of Infectious Disease

The Division of Infectious Disease diagnoses diseases of public health importance, such as West Nile virus encephalitis and rabies, provides genotyping services for diagnostic and epidemiological purposes, and develops rapid, molecular-based tests for detecting pathogens, including biothreat agents. Emerging infectious diseases are investigated, as are pathogenesis, microbial genetics and pathogen evolution. The quality of diagnostic tests performed by licensed laboratories is assured through the Clinical Laboratory Evaluation Program.
