Hourly Research Scientist (Internship) JR-0001741
Applications due 8/15/25
Health Research, Inc. is seeking an Hourly Research Scientist to work within the Division of Translational Medicine at the Wadsworth Center, New York State Department of Health. The primary responsibility of the Hourly Research Scientist will be to assist with and provide support to staff implementing a novel purification method to isolate ribosomes from small volumes of cell culture. This method, called RAPPL (RNA Affinity Purification using Poly-Lysine), has been developed as a simple, cost-effective, and rapid method to purify active ribosomes and other RNA-containing complexes from small cell culture volumes. The incumbent will optimize this method for purifying ribosomes from Escherichia coli (Eco) cell cultures, assist to assess its efficacy of purification as compared to previous methods such as sucrose fractionation, and then apply it to purify ribosomes from other bacterial cell cultures, such as Mycobacterium smegmatis (Msm). The work may involve activities including but not limited to bacterial cell culture, buffer preparation, ultra-centrifugation, cryo-electron electron microscopy grid preparation, RNA gels, protein gels, and biochemical assays.
This position is part of the Pathways to Public Health Internship Program.
